FreeCAD Tutorials for Beginners (2025) | Feature-Based Modeling and Plane Selection in FreeCAD v1 Welcome to Lesson 6 of the FreeCAD Basics for Beginners course!

In this FreeCAD tutorial, we'll cover feature-based modeling and how to choose the right starting plane for your design.

Ideal for beginners learning open-source CAD software, this lesson shows how to break down real-world objects into simple 2D profiles and turn them into powerful 3D models.

What You'll Learn in This FreeCAD Modeling Tutorial

Feature-Based Modeling
Break down objects (e.g., coffee cups) into basic shapes: pipes, loops, plates.
Create separate parts (cup body + handle) and then combine them.
Create simple models (plates with holes, flanges) using a single feature.

Choosing the Right Starting Plane
Primary Planes: XY (Top), XZ (Front), YZ (Side) — Align with the Guide Cube.
Advanced Planes: Reference Plane, Origin Plane, or Face Plane on Existing Geometry. Correct plane = easier workflow (e.g., modeling brackets in a single profile vs. multiple profiles).

2D Profile → 3D Geometry
Draw profiles (rectangles, circles, L-shapes) on a plane.
Keep the outlines plane to avoid geometric breakage.
Convert profiles into solids using extrusion (sheets) or cutting out material with cutting.

Efficient Modeling Workflow
Simplify: Visualize the silhouette. Ignore the initial details.
Specify the profile: Decide on the cross-section (circle, rectangle).
Choose an action: Use extrusion for consistency, loft for variability.
Add details (grooves, bevels). Finally, start with the silhouette. The fewer profiles you need, the faster and cleaner your model will be.
